In our world today feminism has become so common that it appears everywhere. Everywhere we turn, wherever we look there is a feminist. Feminism has so many different meanings that people take it to mean very little. You can’t really give feminism one exact meaning because it just has so many different aspects. Some theorists believe that feminism should be called feminisms. The actual definition of feminism is extremely hard to come by however, the Society textbook defines it as “the advocacy of social equality for men and women, in opposition to a patriarchy and sexism.” There are three different levels of feminism, social, radical and liberal feminism. Feminism itself is a social, political and cultural circumstance that is pro-woman. Feminism is also the study of women dealing with the harmful aspects which some lives may include, language, religion, abuse and socialization. The main point that feminist want to spread throughout the world is that women are just as valuable as men and therefore should be treated just as equally.
Gender equality is the main goal that feminists would like to achieve. In order to achieve this goal, there are different types of strategies, socialist feminism, liberal feminism and radical feminism.
Through Karl Marx’s impressive ideas came socialist feminism. One of the main views of a socialist feminist is that wealth and dominance was always controlled by the men. These socialists do not believe that reforms carried out by men go far enough. What they believe is that replacing the traditional family could only come around by creating an economy that would for once meet the needs of everyone in the nation.
The main belief of liberal feminists is that individuals should be free to bring up their own talents and reach whatever goals and interests that they want. This is the way of “liberal” thinking. The biggest goal that these feminists try to achieve is to try and expand the rights and opportunities of women, which happens to be discussed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. These liberal feminists agree to reproductive freedom for every single woman. They also have a great deal of respect for the family as a social institution but would like to see changes in the areas of maternity and paternity leave as well as child care for the working parent.
Radical feminists find that liberal feminism is insufficient. They also do not believe that even a socialist revolution could put an end to this patriarchy. Radical feminists believe that in order to achieve equality in genders, we must totally forget about gender itself. To try and achieve this goal, we would have to forget the whole childbearing exercise of a mother and replace this with some sort of new reproductive technology. Now having motherhood abolished and forgotten about, radical feminists agree that our society would start to forget about the whole family system and therefore creating an equal and genderless society. There is only one thing that radical feminists see men as being good for, that is their sperm which happens to be a necessity for the whole reproduction system.
For many years, feminists have been ridiculed as well as criticized for demanding changes in language to remove the male bias. This point can actually be seen if we take time to look at the history of actual language use. An example of this would have to be demonstrated when Thomas Jefferson’s spoke the Declaration of Independence in which he wrote that “all men are created equal.” Is Thomas referring to the human beings or just men?

1068 Words5 Pages
Feminism is a body of social theory and political movement primarily based on and motivated by the experiences of women. While generally providing a critique of social relations, many proponents of feminism also focus on analyzing gender inequality and the promotion of women's rights, interests, and issues.
Feminist theory aims to understand the nature of gender inequality and focuses on gender politics, power relations and sexuality. Feminist political activism campaigns on issues such as reproductive rights, domestic violence, maternity leave, equal pay, sexual harassment, discrimination and sexual violence. Themes explored in feminism include discrimination, stereotyping, objectification, sexual objectification, oppression and…show more content…
Some find that the prioritization of oppression and the universalization of the idea of "Woman," which was part of traditional Radical feminist thinking, too generic, and that women in other countries would never experience the same experience of being "woman" than women in Western countries did.
Some radical feminists advocate separatism—a complete separation of male and female in society and culture—while others question not only the relationship between men and women, but the very meaning of "man" and "woman" as well. Some argue that gender roles, gender identity, and sexuality are themselves social constructs. For these feminists, feminism is a primary means to human liberation.
Liberal feminism is a form of feminism that argues that equality for women can be achieved through legal means and social reform, and that men as a group need not be challenged.
Liberal feminism is a somewhat conservative form of feminism by today’s standards, although it is rooted classically in liberalism. Liberal feminism leans towards an equality of sameness with men (not a difference feminism).
Liberal feminism conceives of politics in individualistic terms and looks to reform present "liberal" practices in society, rather than advocating for a wholesale revolutionary change. Feminist writers associated with this tradition are amongst others Mary Wollstonecraft, John Stuart Mill and second wave feminist Betty
